The Central Library of BAS is situated opposite to the building of the National Assembly near the patriarchal temple St. Alexander Nevski.

When is the Central Library open?
Central Library
Monday – Friday, 9:00-17:30.
Sector of Book Stocks and Services:
For readers – Monday – Friday, 9:00-17:00;
Ordering – Monday – Friday, 9:15-16:30.
Acad. Stefan Panaretov Reading Room:
For readers – Monday – Friday, 8:30-18:00.
Every last Friday of the month the Library is closed for readers – sanitary half a day.
Sector of Official Editions and Microfilms: Monday – Friday, 9:00-17:30.


What is the registration procedure of the readers?
Each citizen has a right to uze the services of the Library. For this purpose he should be registered as a reader. The reader’s card is issued in the Sector of Library Services after filling in the respective registration form and showing the necessary documents.
The registration is made with an identity card. When registered those working at BAS must show also a document (or sealed permit) that they are included in the staff of the Academy with a full-time contract. Those working at BAS and the personnel retired on a pension get a free reader’s card. The others pay a yearly or a temporary reader’s card according to the Price-List of the Payed Services and Activities.

 
What are the user services of the Library?
– use of library documents in the reading room of the CL “Acad. Stefan Panaretov” and in the reading room of the Sector of Official Editions and Microfilms;
– lending of library documents for home (only those working in BAS with a constant contract);
– receiving library documents from other libraries in the country and abroad for temporary use by interlibrary loans (only those working in BAS);
– getting references and information on a given theme, bibliographical data of titles, personalia, instrucions for using the reference system of the library, etc.;
– using of technical means for reading on microcarriers and for copying documents.

  

How can one search and order library documents?
References are made and the necessary literature is searched for in the catalogues.
When necessary the librarian on duty from the Sector “Library Services” gives consultation.
The signature in the upper right corner of the catalogue card is filled in.
The librarian on duty from the Sector “Library Services” checks whether the respective library document is free to be ordered.
A loan check (red for the reading room or white for using at home) is filled in.
The orders are run for within 20 minutes.

     
What is the allowed number of books to be lent for home reading?
The readers may lend for home reading no more than 5 volumes at one and the same time. Fiction and textbooks may be lent for one month, scientific literature – up to three months. The term for lending may be prolonged once: the book should be presented and preregistered at the Sector of Library Services. Only books published after 1949 are lent for home reading. The books published before 1949 and all periodicals are used only in the reading room. If the rules are broken, the reader is warned and is exempted from the right to use library documents for 6 months and he is imposed on a fine for each week delay. What types of library documents are not allowed for lending at home? 
Old printed works;
Rare and valuable books;
Periodicals;
Books printed before 1949;
Reference books;
Dissertations;
Microfisches, microfilms and electonic carriers. 

  

What is the way of using the library documents in the reading room “Acad. Stefan Panaretov”?
The ordered literature is taken from the librarian on duty and after using is returned to him. The reader may keep in the reading room a library document up to 7 calendar days from the day of the last using. Dictionaries, reference books, encyclopaedias, periodicals and other library documents from the collection of the reading room should not be taken away. If necessary, the reader leaves his personal card to carry the library document to the xerox. The readers have no right to take away for copying any literature from the building of the CL of BAS.

 

What editions can be used in the Sector of Official Editions and Microfilms at the Book Stocks and Services Department?
Editions of the World Bank;
Editions of UN;
Politology Collection;
Microfilm collection of Old Bulgarian manuscripts;
Microfilm collection of Old Bulgarian, Old Greek and Syrian manuscrips from the Monastery of Synaia “St. Ekaterina”.

    

Where one can use microfilms?
The microfilms are used only in the respective reading room for this purpose of the Sector of Official Editions and Microfilms, equipped with the necessary technology – microfilm readers. 

  
Where one can copy library documents?
The copying of library documents is carried out every working day from 13.00 to 18.00, but only in case that their physical condition allows it. See Price-List of the Payed Services and Activities.

  

What should be done, if a library document is lost?
The reader replaces the lost library document by another of equal worth or pays for it 5 times more expensively after the assessment of the Library Funds Committee.
