Summary

The report considers different points of view in the debate on the future of the languages of separate European nations in the era of globalization. Attention is paid both to the tendency of language purism, on one hand, and to the variety of issues concerning the increasing usage of English as a `lingua franca', on the other. By the means of analysis of the nature of English/American borrowings, quasi- and pseudo-anglicisms in some European languages the author exposes his own position in the controversy sharing the believe that languages are `self-controlling' systems and any kind of artificial restrictions could be anything but beneficial to their natural development.
