Bulgarian Studies at the University of Bucharest - Today and Tomorrow
M. Mangiulea Bucharest, Romania |
Summary
The history of Slavistics at our university, the Bulgarian studies included, began in 1891, when the well-known scientist and professor loan Bogdan (1864—1919) established the first department of Slavonic studies in Romania. Teaching modem Slavonic languages is linked to the name of one of loan Bogdan's disciples, prof. Petre Cancel (1890—1947), who was a head of the department between 1920 and 1947. After the 1948 reform in the educational system, along with the development of philology and humanities, it becomes more and more obvious that the establishment of separate sections for each of Slavonic philologies at the University of Bucharest was a necessity. Thus the section of Bulgarian language and literature was inaugurated in 1949. Successors of a rich tradition, we, the professorial staff of this section, feel responsible to continue and develop this tradition in the spirit, conception and conditions of the 21st century. Our activity is concentrated mainly in two directions. First one refers to our active participation in elaborating the contents and the form of the teaching programme, the structure and themes of our special lectures, seminars, practical lessons, the work with students and candidates for a master's or doctor's degree. Simultaneously, we pay attention to our research work of theoretic and practical importance, carried on in various fields of the Bulgarian studies or of the Romanian-Bulgarian contrastive studies. The second direction concerns the cooperation with universities from Slavonic countries, especially with the University of Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo, with the two cultural associations of the Bulgarian minority in Romania, with the teachers and pupils of the Bulgarian High-School in Bucharest and, last but not least, with the Bulgarian Embassy in Romania. In spite of the financial, economical, in the educational system difficulties Romania has to face, we are confident in the future of the Bulgarian studies at the Bucharest University, as our achievements are a reality; we believe in our work and its efficiency, in the students we teach, in the persons we collaborate with.
