Summary

Odessa State University is one of the leading sentres in the field of Slavonic studies in Ukraine. The long term tradition in the field of Bulgarian studies at the university has its background closely related to the presence of Bulgarian diaspora in Ukraine and the ‘golden age’ of Slavistics dating back from the pre-revolutionary period when honored researchers in the history of Old Slavonic written herritage, like V. I. Grigoroviæ, P. S. Biljarslij, M.G. Popruženko, worked as university professors.
Among the greatest achievements of Odessa University scholars in the field of Bulgarian literary studies and linguistics after 1917 are the researches in dialects of Bulgarian diaspora in Ukraine. They were conducted by the guidance of Prof. M. B. Bernstain, the chief editor of one of the basic works in the field of Bulgarian dialectology “Atlas of Bulgarian dialects in Ukraine”.
A new stage in the history of Bulgarian studies in Odessa State Universiry started back in 1995 when a Bulgarian Section of the Philology Faculty was established. Nowadays specialists in Bulgarian studies devote their work both to the preservation and further development of the great scholarly tradition in the field of the history of Bulgarian dialects in Ukraine and to teaching modern Bulgarian in order to face the new requirements related to the process of cultural revival and national self-identity of Bulgarian diaspora in Ukraine.
