Bulgarian Studies in „Friedrich Schiller“ University, Jena

Summary

There is no special Bulgaristics subject at „Friedfich Schiller“ University in Jena. We have been having only a lectureship for Bulgarian since 1996. We are teaching Bulgarian language and culture 8 hours a week during the term, which satisfies at least the basic student needs.
The lecturer and the professor of Southslavistics/Studies of South-Eastern Europe are seeing themselves not only as providers of traditional slavistics topics, but also of themes which are of particular importance in the modern business life. Besides concrete knowledge we want to teach our students how to approach scientific questions on the one hand, and on the other how to succeed outside the academic life in professions like journalism, tourism, cultural and social management or as advisers in crisis regions.
We try to achieve these goals among other things through alternatvie teaching methods and with „normal“ lectures and information rounds like our „Club South-East“ which is also frequently joined by people outside the university.
We are training our students with the help of the new media and teaching them to use the Internet for information. We also encourage them to take part in a chat-club, known as a discussion forum on the World Wide Web. Members of the University of Veliko Târnovo (VTU) and the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität (FSU) Jena will be connected over the Internet once a week in order to exchange the latest information and to practise at the same time their mutual language knowledge.
In the lectureship we are producing various teaching tools as a Bulgarian grammar in German and a German-Bulgarian „lexic(on)-minimum“ based on the needs of German beginners. These and other projects will be realised with the assistence of our Bulgarian partner university.
We are aslo trying to promote Bulgarian studies to the public and to gain more students and interested scholars to join us, because, sadly, in Germany there are still many people who don’t know about the existence of Bulgaristics at all.
